Germaine Tillon, Sage, Scholar, Fighter - Resistance Museum in Chamalières
Welcome to an immersive experience at the heart of the Museum of Resistance, Internment and Deportation in Chamalières, Puy de Dôme. Today, we have a special opportunity: a visit to the temporary exhibition dedicated to an exceptional figure of the French Resistance, Germaine Tillion. It is an exploration that I am delighted to share with you, as it also marks my first discovery of this exhibition.
Along with Christine, our guide for this tour, we will delve into the life and legacy of Germaine Tillion. Born in 1907, Germaine Tillion was a renowned French ethnologist, resistance fighter, and intellectual. Engaged from the beginning of World War II, she joined the network of the Musée de l’Homme in Paris, then became involved in the Resistance by organizing escape networks and collecting intelligence on Nazi concentration camps.
But it was her courage and humanity during her internment at the Ravensbrück concentration camp that left their mark. There, she used her skills as an ethnologist to document the daily lives of the inmates, defying Nazi oppression with remarkable intellectual resilience. On this tour, we will discover how the exhibition honours the life and work of Germaine Tillion, highlighting her extraordinary achievements and her influence on the collective memory of the resistance.
