MOROCCAN MINERS,
dark memory
Découvrez une série documentaire en 4 épisodes autour de cette histoire méconnue des mineurs marocains appelés à travailler dans des conditions pénibles voire même dangereuses dans le nord de la France.
In the 1960s and 1970s, during the first oil crisis, France recruited nearly 80,000 young Moroccans, often illiterate, to work at low cost in the mines of the north and Lorraine. This mass immigration represents the last great wave of foreign workers who came to extract coal from the depths of the French earth.
Moroccans were selected according to extremely rigorous criteria. They were looking for young, robust and healthy men, capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of the mines. Once in France, they were plunged into a hostile environment, far from their families and their cultural references. Housed in often unsanitary and isolated mining towns, they faced grueling work days, in often precarious security conditions.
These workers played a very important role in the French economy by providing the necessary workforce to maintain coal production during a period of energy crisis. Despite many challenges and personal sacrifices, their contribution allowed the French mining industry to continue. Their story is an invaluable testimony to the industrial era and the migratory dynamics of the time, highlighting the human realities behind the great economic and social transformations. Today, it is important to recognize and commemorate the contribution of these Moroccan workers, whose efforts and sacrifices have greatly contributed to the economic development of France, while enriching its cultural and social heritage.
