THE HEROINES OF THE RESISTANCE

Women became a central element, a privileged target, even a pillar, of Vichy ideology. Pétain's project, the National Revolution under the banner of "Work, Family, Fatherland" aimed to establish a society where individualism, banned, gave way to a strictly hierarchical community spirit. In this vision, family values occupied a preponderant place, relegating the individual to a determined and fixed role, without freedom of opinion. Women were erected as guardians and promoters of these values, confined to a domestic status and subjected to the imperatives of the family and the fatherland, according to the rigid standards decreed by the Vichy regime.

However, in the face of this ideological oppression, many women refused to submit passively. They joined the Resistance, braving the risks to fight injustice and defend freedom.

In the shadows, they played a vital role, hiding fugitives, transmitting clandestine messages, thus actively contributing to the fight against the occupier and his collaborators.

I invite you to listen to a 4-part series on the history of women in the Resistance on Memento. They hid, housed, fed, supplied, demonstrated, and cared for in secret, braving the most serious risks to defend their values and their homeland. However, at the Liberation, their contribution was often minimized, or even hidden. Let us study together the mentalities of this historical period, by immersing ourselves in the oppressive atmosphere of Vichy society and examining the place of women within this political and social fabric. Why did they join the Resistance despite the dangers? How were they organized and what were their means of action? And above all, what remains today of their extraordinary journey in our collective memories, and how can we honor their legacy?
