On September 11, 1973, what had been a dream for many—to bring about profound change without resorting to violence and to improve the lives of the poorest through peaceful reforms—became a nightmare. On that day, a military coup overthrew the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende, plunging Chile into a dark period of repression and terror.
Thousands of Chileans opposed to the authoritarian regime that was being established endured the worst atrocities: assassinations, forced disappearances, systematic torture, arbitrary imprisonment and forced exile. This period has left a lasting mark on the collective memory of the country, leaving deep scars in the social and political fabric of Chile.
