THE COMMITTED LOOK OF CAMILLE MARTIN JUAN

Discover a 3-part documentary series where Camille Martin Juan, photographer and videographer, tells us about three humanitarian missions. Her work explores the world and bears witness to its conflicts and injustices, exposing them to the eyes of all. Influenced by an approach to photography as a powerful narrative tool, she tells universal stories and connects seemingly disparate lives through powerful visuals.

Photojournalism and photojournalism have a unique power: to visually document events, situations and living conditions around the world. By capturing authentic and often moving images, these forms of visual journalism offer an unparalleled perspective on historical events, humanitarian crises, conflicts and other aspects of everyday reality. The incisive, sometimes shocking photographs have the ability to raise public awareness of social, political, environmental and economic issues. By making visible the injustices, suffering and challenges faced by people around the world, photojournalism inspires people to think, question and mobilize for change.

It is for all these reasons that I wanted to share with you today on Memento, the story of Camille Martin Juan, a photographer, videographer whose work explores the world while bearing witness to its conflicts and injustices, influenced by an approach to photography as a tool to tell universal stories and connect seemingly disparate lives through powerful visuals.

In this three-part series, Camille shares with us her journey, her work in Palestine to show the daily lives of the inhabitants in a colonized country, then in a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh revealing an unprecedented humanitarian and health crisis. Finally, she will take us to the heart of the missions she carries out with NGOs such as SOS Méditerranée, highlighting the tragic realities of migrants in search of a better future.

Palestine: Bearing Witness for the Silent Voices

In this first episode, Camille tells us about her experiences in Palestine in 2011 and 2017, which deeply enriched her artistic perspective and her commitment as a visual storyteller. We reflect together on the power of the image and the responsibility of the videographer in the faithful and respectful representation of the subjects treated, far from the sensationalism of traditional media.

How did Camille’s initial visit to Palestine change her perception of international conflicts and influence her subsequent work in the region? How did interactions with Palestinian paramedics during protests enrich her understanding of the human consequences of conflict? What reflections does she share on the role of images in constructing media narratives, and what is her opinion on the media’s representation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict over the years?

Rohingya Refugee Camp: Documenting the Tragedies of Uprooted Peoples

In this second episode, Camille takes us to Bangladesh to the Rohingya refugee camp where she found herself in 2017. After having to leave Palestine, she was motivated to go to Bangladesh to observe and understand forced displacement, similar to those experienced by Palestinians during the creation of the State of Israel. Her approach is part of a quest to understand the human and environmental impacts of geopolitical conflicts, hoping to find universal lessons on the resistance and adaptation of peoples. During this episode, Camille will also address the ethical and methodological challenges of photography in crisis zones. She will emphasize the importance of building a relationship of trust with the people photographed, the impact of language and communication in fieldwork, and how self-presentation and human interaction open doors and allow us to capture more authentic moments of life.

On board the Ocean Viking:
Bearing witness to tragedies at sea

In this latest episode of the documentary series, Camille takes us into her tumultuous daily life aboard the Ocean Viking as she carries out missions. As part of a dedicated team, she helps rescue hundreds of migrants during their perilous sea crossing. Camille documents every crucial moment to make us understand the reality on board and the plight of those desperately seeking safety. Through her lens, she doesn’t just capture facts: she also captures the raw emotions and personal stories of the individuals rescued, something sorely lacking in our traditional media. Her photographs, beyond information, raise awareness of the harsh realities of sea rescue missions. Through her physical and artistic commitment, Camille highlights the essential efforts deployed in these critical interventions, highlighting the vital importance of humanitarian aid.
