These decades were marked by unprecedented political and social violence, marked by terrorist attacks by extremist groups from both the left and right, political kidnappings, and violent clashes that bloodied the streets of major Italian cities. This tumultuous period left deep scars on the Italian national consciousness, with thousands of deaths, broken families, and a society gripped by fear and instability.
Although often obscured or downplayed by Europe or Italy itself, these events remain a dark and complex chapter in the country's political history, calling for an honest reassessment for national healing and reconciliation with the past. The Years of Lead have profoundly influenced Italian political culture, fueling distrust in government institutions and the rise of populism.
